Artist Statement
Umwelt describes the way each of us experiences the world through our own senses. My artwork begins in my own umwelt, and is then viewed through yours. That overlap of perspectives is what interests me. At its best, it holds a truth and connection that words alone could never capture.
I walk until I find that place that glimmers for me. Those moments always feel right and worth capturing. Painting outdoors puts me directly in touch with what inspires me, and the shifting scene demands a balanced honesty to both the landscape and what I choose to bring to it.
Each painting starts with my way of seeing, but it feels complete only when the right viewer brings their own perspective to it.
Plein air is my favorite way to work. Light influences everything we perceive, but it continually shifts and reshapes a scene. Amid weather changes, curious spectators, and time pressures, I try to stay decisive in my choices as I respond to it all. By nature of that process, each work becomes a blend of honesty to the moment with my own personal storytelling. Plein Air paintings are memories preserved, and I think it's a beautiful thing to share.
