Last year, I was new to plein air shows, and Peak was only my second plein air event. I arrived at the last minute and managed to complete just one painting, but I was fortunate enough to win first place in the emerging artists category. My biggest challenge at that time was deciding what to paint in an unfamiliar area where I had little time to explore.

This year was different; there were painting opportunities everywhere I looked. I met up with friends and painted together, which made the experience much easier now that I am familiar with Woodland Park. There is definitely a sense of comfort that comes with participating in a show for the second time. I really stepped up my involvement this year. While in town, I completed seven paintings but had to narrow it down to three for the show. My painting "Cloud Country" won first place in the advanced artists category, and I also received a sponsor’s choice award for my painting "Mule Creek Reflections."

This event is organized by Gayle Gross at Reserve Our Gallery in Woodland Park, along with volunteers from the local artist community, and they are extremely good at community outreach, finding event sponsors, and marketing. I’ve done a lot of shows this year, and Peak is so well organized and full of opportunities for artists. It’s one of those events that I don’t question whether I will return to it next year or not. I’m looking forward to being back.
