Confetti

Pastel | 8x8”

A plein air painting finished in the studio

  • This painting started as a plein-air study, but I completely reworked it in the studio. Some ideas take time to develop, and in this work, I wanted to explore different pigments qualities in relation to one another and changing environments.

I have long compared fall foliage to confetti. I wanted to create a painting that captures that feeling. While working on this painting I often switched my setting between low light and bright studio lighting. This was to further my understanding of the luminosities of different pigments. My goal was to make a painting that still looked good across a dimly lit room, but held surprises in it when it is brought into the light.
